3 New Compliance Methods for Code Enforcement of Exterior Wall Assemblies

Below is an article on important new section in Chapter 14 of the 2024 International Building Code. Briefly, this new section provides three compliance methods for code enforcement of exterior wall assemblies that must be tested in accordance with NFPA. These compliance paths as incorporated in the 2024 International Building Code involve:

 

  1. Construct what is tested.

  2. Construct what was tested.

  3. Construct with approved analysis judged fire safe.

 

As many know, exterior wall assemblies have become increasingly complex and critical elements of the building envelope, and advancements in our understanding of building science, coupled with the need to improve the energy efficiency and resilience of buildings, have led to innovative solutions in both building products and construction methods.
